Bicky's Bests - Chicago XIV OR: I Rescued This Bargain Bin Baby and Now I'm Its Only Fan Club President 💀💿✨
BICKY’S BESTS presents a TRUE STORY 🎬 about the time I found a dusty, CRIMINALLY ignored album in a bargain bin and decided to adopt it as my emotional support CD 💿💖 My therapist says I’m “projecting” and my friends say I have “terrible taste” but HONESTLY besties, sometimes the universe hands you a stray flop and you just… have to love it 🥺✨
Okay so here’s the thing 😤 I was in this dusty record store 🏚️ just minding my business, ~dragging my hand along a row of albums like a detective looking for CLUES~ when my fingers landed on this sad little jewel case. The cover was COOL — just the roman numerals XIV in a classy font, all minimal and mysterious 🕵️♀️ But the price tag said $1.99. ONE DOLLAR AND NINETY-NINE CENTS. FOR AN ENTIRE ALBUM. I felt a tear ~forming in my eye~ 😭 This is not a tragedy… OR IS IT?!
I took it home and popped it in my disc drive 🖥️ ~holding my breath like I was defusing a bomb~ and guys… it’s SO GOOD. I don’t know what songs are on it okay I’m not a music historian I’m a VIBE HISTORIAN 🎓 And the vibe?? IMMACULATE. Smooth. A little jazz? A little rock? A little “we don’t know how to sell records anymore” energy? YES PLEASE 🙏💅
But here’s the part that REALLYYYY sends me into a spiral 🌀 ~spins around dramatically in my desk chair~ This album had Tom Dowd producing — Tom DOWD!! The man who worked with Aretha FREAKIN Franklin and Eric Clapton and CREAM!! And it STILL flopped?? 😳💥 That is WILD. That is a MOVIE. Somewhere out there a band poured their HEARTS into a record and the world just… yawned and walked away. I can’t. I actually can’t. Let me show you the EVIDENCE 📋
I have compiled a non-negotiable case for why this album is UNDESERVING of its bargain bin fate. The evidence is OVERWHELMING.
~slams hands on the table like a TV lawyer~ CASE RESTED. GUILTY OF BEING FORGOTTEN. SENTENCE: ONE MILLION STREAMS FROM BICKY NABY, PERSONALLY 👩⚖️💿
And you know what’s the saddest part?? 😭 This was also the LAST album with Laudir de Oliveira on percussion. LAST ONE. So the drummer left AND nobody bought the record. That’s DOUBLE LOSS. DOUBLE. I’m not okay. ~clutches the jewel case to my chest like a lost puppy~
BUT WAIT there’s a HAPPY ending! ✨✨ ~takes a deep breath and smiles through the tears~ I am now the proud president 🔔 and sole member 🌟 of the Official Chicago XIV Fan Club. Benefits of membership include: unlimited crying in record stores, exclusive rights to tell people “you wouldn’t get it, it’s a deep cut”, and one (1) free GIF of a cat smiling when you accept your fate 🐱
So yeah. That’s BICKY’S BESTS for this week 💫 A flopped 1980 album with zero awards, zero gold records, and exactly ONE devotee. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. If you see a bargain bin anywhere… check inside. You might find YOUR weird sad soulmate album too. I believe in you 👊💿✨
~puts album back in the tray and presses play again~ love you, Chicago XIV. I’ll be here. Forever. Until the CD rots or I do 🫡💖
