Bicky's Bests - The Theory of Poker OR: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Semi-Bluff 💀✨
OKAY BESTIES ✨💖 gather round because i have just experienced a SPIRITUAL EMERGENCY in the form of a 1978 book called The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky 📚💀 and i thought it was gonna make me a MATH GENIUS who could calculate odds in my SLEEP but instead it just handed me a MIRROR and i DID NOT like what i saw 😭💔
~flips open the book with dramatic flourish~
so this book is like… the OLD TESTAMENT of poker, okay? david sklansky wrote it in 1978 and then kept revising it until 1987 because he’s a PERFECTIONIST GOBLIN who wants us all to understand expected value and semi-bluffing and implied odds and i’m sitting here like ~stares blankly at a concept called “Sklansky Bucks”~ wHaT is HAPPENING to my brain right now 🧠💥
the book is literally 300 pages of PURE STRATEGY — no beginner hand-holding, no “here’s how to hold your cards” nonsense, just STRAIGHT INTO THE DEEP END like ~jumps into a pool of poker sharks~ 🦈🌊 david sklansky is out here dropping concepts like Fundamental Theorem of Poker and optimum bluffing frequency and i’m like BRO i can barely remember to BRUSH MY TEETH 🪥💀
~holds up the book cover dramatically~
so i thought i’d be a cool math genius but NO — i am a SEMI-BLUFFING DISASTER. my expected value is literally ZERO. i’ve been playing poker like a CHAOS GREMLIN throwing chips around and hoping for the best and now this book is telling me that implied odds are a thing and i have to think about FUTURE HANDS before i even CALL 😱 ~clutches chest dramatically~
but WAIT — there’s a LIGHTER SIDE, okay? because the book also talks about reverse implied odds which is basically when you’re like “i think i’m winning but actually i’m about to get DESTROYED” and that’s ME EVERY SINGLE TIME i sit down at a poker table 💀 puts on a tiny crown of shame 👑
i’m not even gonna lie — i read this book and immediately started questioning every life decision i’ve ever made. do i even have a positive expected value as a human? or am i just out here semi-bluffing my way through relationships and deadlines and hoping nobody calls my bluff? 😭💔 ~stares into middle distance~
~record scratch~ 📞📞📞
~…okay where was i~ 😅
and then there’s the part about optimum bluffing frequency — like you’re supposed to bluff EXACTLY the right amount of times so your opponents can’t figure you out. but i’m out here bluffing 100% of the time because i have NO IDEA what i’m doing and i’m just PRAYING it works 🙏 does a little prayer hands dance 💃
HONESTLY though — this book is ICONIC. it’s from 1978 and it’s still the POKER BIBLE. david sklansky wrote 13 books on poker and i bet he’s out there calculating his own expected value of happiness like a NERD KING. and i love him for it. blows a kiss to the sky 💋
so what’s the rating? i’m giving The Theory of Poker a BICKY’S BESTS SEAL OF CHAOS — 9 out of 10 semi-bluffs. it’s a MASTERPIECE but it DESTROYED my ego so i’m taking one point off for emotional damage 💔✨
if you read this book, be prepared to face your own SOUL in a dark room with a deck of cards. ~whispers into the void~ you’re not as smart as you think you are, bestie. but that’s okay. because now you can learn about semi-bluffing and implied odds and maybe you’ll actually win a hand one day. or at least feel FANCY while you lose 💖✨
~collapses into a glitter pile of existential dread~
peace out, poker pals — may your expected value be POSITIVE and your semi-bluffs be BELIEVABLE 💀💖
